HOW WE WORK
Our Approach
At Women Environs Zambia, we work alongside rural women to strengthen their voices, knowledge, livelihoods, and leadership. Our approach is rooted in the understanding that women are central to food production, environmental protection, family wellbeing, and community development. Through practical learning, collective action, advocacy, and locally led solutions, we support women to claim their rights and build resilient communities.
Seed Sovereignty
We promote the protection, production, exchange, and use of indigenous and local seed. Rural women are custodians of seed knowledge, and WEZ supports them to preserve diverse seed varieties that are affordable, climate resilient, nutritious, and suited to local conditions. Through seed multiplication, seed fairs, seed banks, and farmer-to-farmer exchange, women strengthen food sovereignty and reduce dependence on expensive external inputs.
Climate Justice
Climate change is already affecting rural women through droughts, floods, unreliable rainfall, water shortages, and declining harvests. WEZ works to ensure that rural women’s experiences, knowledge, and demands are recognised in climate discussions and policies. We promote community-led climate solutions that protect natural resources, strengthen resilience, and hold decision-makers accountable for just and inclusive climate action.
Feminism and Women’s Leadership
We believe that rural women have the right to participate fully in decisions that affect them in any aspect. Through feminist schools, learning spaces, and community dialogues, WEZ supports women to understand their rights, organise collectively, and take up leadership roles. We work to challenge discrimination and create space for women’s voices in households, communities, institutions, and policy processes.
Agroecology
WEZ promotes agroecology as a pathway towards healthy food, healthy soils, biodiversity, and sustainable livelihoods. We support rural women to use ecological farming methods that build soil fertility, conserve water, protect local seed, reduce dependence on harmful chemicals, and improve household food security. Agroecology values local knowledge and enables communities to produce food in ways that respect people and the environment.
Sustainable Livelihoods
We support women to turn their agricultural knowledge and local resources into sustainable income opportunities. Through skills development in processing, packaging, marketing, local product development, and enterprise strengthening, women are able to add value to what they produce. This includes products such as indigenous seeds and community-based products that contribute to household income and organisational sustainability.
Gender-Based Violence
WEZ recognises that gender-based violence limits women’s ability to benefit from development opportunities. We create safe spaces where women can discuss their experiences, learn about their rights, and access support through community networks and referrals. Our work promotes dignity, equality, shared decision-making, and communities where women and girls can live free from violence and discrimination.
