On 18th November 2024, Women Environs in Zambia (WEZ) hosted a seed pass-on program in Kasenga, Chongwe District. This initiative was a strategic response to the 2024 drought, aimed at strengthening food security and fostering sustainable agricultural practices among rural women.
Supporting Resilience Through Seeds
The event began with opening remarks from the WEZ Treasurer, who outlined the organization’s commitment to addressing climate change and drought impacts. She emphasized WEZ’s key thematic areas of Gender Justice and Environmental Justice, calling on participants to work diligently to ensure a bumper harvest. “A successful harvest will enable this program to expand and benefit more communities,” she said.
The WEZ Kasenga Chairperson encouraged recipients to view the seeds as tools for development and resilience. “The seeds you receive today are a gift from the hands of women,” she noted, urging participants to plant them and contribute to the area’s food security and development.
Key Activities and Program Orientation
The WEZ Program Officer provided an orientation on the seed pass-on forms, explaining the requirements for tracking and sustainability. She shared that the sunflower seeds distributed were sourced from Chisamba, highlighting the success of the ongoing seed pass-on initiative and its potential to scale.
The event also drew the attention of the local leadership, with the Ward Councillor in attendance, showcasing support for the initiative from local authorities.
A Collective Effort for Food Security
This program reflects WEZ’s dedication to empowering rural communities through sustainable agriculture. By putting seeds in the hands of women and providing tools for resilience, WEZ continues to champion food security, gender equality, and climate adaptation in Zambia.
Together, we can ensure a greener, more secure future.
