On August 9, 2024, the Rural Women Assembly, in collaboration with Women Environs in Zambia, organized an impactful visit to HillCrest Primary School in the Kasenga Area, Chongwe District. The focus of this visit was to address critical issues affecting young girls, including sexual reproductive health, gender-based violence (GBV), and early marriages. The initiative aimed to educate, empower, and inspire the girls to make informed decisions about their futures.
Engaging and Enlightening Discussions
The girls of Hill Crest Primary School actively participated in the presentations, showing great enthusiasm and eagerness to learn. The session was not just a one-way lecture; it was an interactive experience. The pupils engaged in group discussions, where they explored the causes of early marriages, such as poverty, peer pressure, and the desire to emulate married peers. They also shared their thoughts on the importance of staying in school and delaying marriage to secure a brighter future.
Challenges Highlighted by the Headteacher
During the visit, the headteacher provided valuable insights into the challenges faced by the pupils. He noted that during the rainy season, many students are absent from school, often to assist their families with farming or to herd animals. Additionally, he highlighted the lack of basic necessities, such as school books, uniforms, and proper sanitary facilities, which hampers the learning environment. A pressing issue raised was the urgent need for the construction of a proper toilet at the school.
Way Forward: Collaborative Efforts for Lasting Change
The discussions didn’t stop at identifying problems; they also focused on solutions. The way forward includes:
- Involving Parents: A concerted effort will be made to involve parents in the campaign, educating them on the importance of addressing sexual reproductive health, GBV, and early marriages.
- Supporting Vulnerable Children: Plans are underway to provide vulnerable children with essential items such as school supplies, uniforms, and sanitary products, ensuring they can attend school regularly and comfortably.
- Improving Facilities: Efforts will be made to improve the school’s infrastructure, starting with the construction of a toilet, to create a safer and more conducive learning environment.
Conclusion: A Call to Action
The visit to Hill Crest Primary School was more than just an educational session; it was a call to action. The empowerment of young girls through education and support is essential for creating a healthier, more equitable society. By addressing these critical issues, we are paving the way for a future where every girl has the opportunity to be healthy, educated, and free from violence.
